On this day in 1995, cult Boro icon Uwe Fuchs enjoyed the finest hour of his short stay on Teesside.
Our final season at Ayresome Park was an emotionally charged one. Boro were determined to provide a fitting farewell to the legendary stadium, and with new boss Bryan Robson at the helm, promotion to the Premier League was in sight come the turn of the year.
But a worrying post-Christmas slump, and a run of six matches without a win, set the alarm bells ringing.
Enter Uwe Fuchs.
If little was known about the burly German striker when he arrived on Teesside on loan from Fortuna Koln, he’d soon be the talk of the town.
Following a goal on his full debut against Charlton, and another in a crucial away win against fellow promotion-chasers Wolves, Fuchs’ fine form – and burgeoning love affair with the Boro fans - continued as Bristol City came to town on March 4.
The striker showed class and composure to open the scoring at Ayresome Park, rounding the opposing goalkeeper before stroking it home. That was followed by two clinically-taken first-time strikes to wrap up his hat-trick and the three points.
Nine goals in 13 starts from Fuchs fired Boro to the Division One title, and forever sealed his place in Boro folklore.
