A statute commemorating Boro legend George Camsell was officially unveiled at the Riverside on Friday evening.
Members of the Camsell family, including son George Camsell Jr, and sculptor Sean Hedges-Quinn were in attendance at the unveiling, along with other special guests and spectators.
The Durham-born striker played for Middlesbrough from 1925 to 1939 and remains the club’s all-time leading goalscorer with a total of 345 goals in 453 appearances. He continues to hold the highest international goals-to-game ratio of any England player awarded more than a single cap, with 18 goals in his 9 appearances, and scored in every game he played for his country.
In the 1926/27 season, Camsell scored 59 league goals for Middlesbrough, which remains a record in the English second tier, while 9 league hat-tricks he scored in the same season is a record across the English professional game.
The staute now stands proudly at the Ayresome Gates, along with those of fellow Boro greats Wilf Mannion and George Hardwick.
