Emmanuel Latte Lath and Lukas Engel were the week’s two arrivals at Rockliffe and the duo were both handed their debuts against the Terriers.
The Ivorian striker almost made an immediate impact and was denied twice inside the first five minutes. Engel also started well and was architect of a move that led to Sammy Silvera having a shot at goal.
Hackney went close and Silvera lashed a drive just wide of the mark as Boro started like a house on fire against Huddersfield.
Amazingly, during the early domination, Seny Dieng was still called upon to make one save while Brahima Diarra hit the upright.
More good football from Boro led to Marcus Forss having a shot deflected wide, and the home side were putting Huddersfield under some real pressure.
When Forss sent an effort rifling towards goal after some great play, Lee Nicholls had to be alert to make a good save.
The impressive Morgan Rogers almost created a chance for Hackney after a beautiful pass as Boro played some cracking stuff.
The second half was less than two minutes old when Sorba Thomas’ low corner hit Dael Fry on the leg and deflected into the goal.
It was a real sucker punch given Boro’s first half dominance, and a real boost for the away side, who had offered little since the very early exchanges.
It left Boro needing a route back into the contest and Silvera went close again with a short which flashed over the bar.
Josh Ruffels made a decisive clearance after Rogers pulled a ball back into the box and Nicholls also denied the Boro man with a great save.
But the deserved goal came on the hour courtesy of an absolute belter from Hackney. Rogers and Silvera were involved in the build-up before Hackney lashed the ball home from an angle just inside the 18-yard box. Nicholls had no chance.
Latte Lathe almost had Boro in front moments later. He was denied by Nicholls after Hackney released him with a great ball.
Darragh Lenihan made an important block for Boro, and Jonathan Hogg sent a shot wide when Huddersfield threatened as the contest continued to flow from one end to the other.
Substitute Matt Crooks almost applied the finishing touch after a great by Rav van den Berg while Silvera sent a shot over the top after some great work by Riley McGree and Isaiah Jones.
Silvera went close again in the third minute of stoppage time after another driving run, but it wasn't to be and Boro were unable to find a winner.
