Boro exited the National League Cup after a penalty shoot-out defeat at Boston United on Tuesday.

In a game Boro had to win to keep alive any hopes of qualification, Luke Woolston scored what looked being the decisive goal from a free-kick on 86 minutes to put Mark Tinkler's charges ahead.

But Jacob Hazel hit back to level matters in stoppage time after Tony Weston hit the bar.

Both sides picked up a point from the 1-1 draw with a further point available to the winners of a penalty shoot-out.

Boston stepped up first, and both sides had a 100% record until Boro's fifth penalty when Cameron Gregory saved from Ajay Matthews to secure the hosts a 5-4 spot-kick success.

Boro travel to Tamworth next Tuesday for the final group game with neither side able to catch Newcastle United U21s and Leeds United U21s, who have secured the top two spots.

Boro U21s: Lloyd, Patterson-Powell (Lennon 66), Gitau, Lindo, McCormick, Finch (Woolston 73), Agyemang, Stott, Acheampong (Nkrumah 73), Matthews, Cartwright (Coulson 59). Subs (not used): Bakre, Tawiah, Fisher.

Attendance: 273
