It's five years since Carling Cup hero Ugo Ehiogu sadly passed away.
Ugo made 149 appearances for Boro between 2000 and 2007 after joining the club from Aston Villa for a club-record fee.
Signed by Bryan Robson, the Hackney-born central defender would rekindle a formidable defensive partnership at Boro with another former Villan, Gareth Southgate.
Ehiogu made a difficult start to life at Boro, his debut at Charlton reduced to just five minutes due to injury. But the imperious defender came back stronger, scoring four goals during his debut season.
Ugo went on to establish himself as a key figure around the club and he was a member of our Carling Cup winning team in February 2004 when we beat Bolton Wanderers 2-1 at the Millennium Stadium.
Injuries restricted his time on the pitch the following season, but in 2005/06 he made seven UEFA Cup appearances, including coming on as a late substitute when we beat Steaua Bucharest at the Riverside to reach our first ever European final.
Ehiogu earned three of his four England caps while a Boro player, as well as scoring one international goal - in a 3-0 win against Spain at Villa Park.
In late 2006, Ugo joined Leeds United on loan before returning to Boro to make what proved to be his final appearance for the club, coming on as a substitute during a 4-3 FA Cup victory against Hull City at the Riverside in January 2007. Later that month, the defender moved on to Rangers before eventually joining Sheffield United, where he brought the curtain down on his playing career.
Ugo tragically passed away aged just 44 in April 2017 while coaching with Tottenham Hotspur.
