Riley McGree and Australia celebrated qualification for the 2022 World Cup after a nerve-shredding penalty shootout victory over Peru.

McGree was an unused substitute for the intercontinental play-off in Doha, which was decided by spot kicks after a goalless 120 minutes.

Substitute goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne was the unlikely hero in only his third cap, stepping off the bench to save from Alex Valera as the penalties reached sudden death.

It's a fifth consecutive World Cup finals qualification for the Socceroos, while McGree could become the latest in a succession of Boro players to represent their country on the biggest stage as the Australians join France, Denmark and Tunisia in Group D.

Elsewhere on Monday evening, Kamil Conteh was in action for Sierra Leone who picked up a first point of AFCON qualifying in a 2-2 draw with Guinea-Bissau.

Conteh played the full match as the Leone Stars battled back from two goals down to salvage a share of the spoils in Conakry.
