A look back at the ins and outs at Boro this summer…

Boro’s summer dealings began with a trio of departures in the goalkeeping department, with Joe Lumley joining Reading, Sol Brynn moving to Swindon Town and Zach Hemming returning to Kilmarnock, each on a season-long loan. Max Metcalfe would follow them in a loan move to Spennymoor Town shortly after, while Dejan Stojanovic made the switch to German outfit SSV Regensburg.

After the arrival of young Sierra Leone midfielder Kamil Conteh from Watford, our first senior signing was another goalkeeper, Liam Roberts, agreeing terms at Boro after earning plenty of plaudits with Northampton Town.

In mid-June, defender Nathan Wood was signed by Swansea City, and forward Toyosi Olusanya departed for St Mirren, both permanent deals.

There was a boost for Boro when captain Jonny Howson agreed to a new contract with the club, and that was followed by exciting wing-back Ryan Giles arriving on a season-long loan from Wolves. Experienced defender Darragh Lenihan soon joined them, ending a decade-long stay with Blackburn Rovers.

Into July, there were a trio of loan departures; Martin Payero returned to his homeland of Argentina with Boca Juniors, while Grant Hall and Hayden Coulson secured moves to Rotherham United and Aberdeen respectively.

Shortly after Boro’s return from a pre-season training camp in Portugal, there was a second addition to Boro’s goalkeeping ranks with USA International Zack Steffen joining on a season-long loan from Manchester City.

It was a month in which two players completed transfers to the Premier League, Djed Spence finalising a much-mooted move to Tottenham Hotspur, and Marcus Tavernier stepping up with newly-promoted AFC Bournemouth.

Towards the end of July, defender Tommy Smith, who had spent time training with the club in pre-season, made his move to Boro official on a one-year contract.

The following day, our first striking recruitment of the summer was completed with Finnish forward Marcus Forss signing on a long-term contract from top flight Brentford.

At this point, the 2022/23 season officially got underway, and Boro continued to work on deals both incoming and outgoing.

US international striker Matthew Hoppe came in from Spanish team Mallorca, midfielder Alex Mowatt arrived from Championship rivals West Brom, and Uche Ikpeazu left the club for Turkish side Konyaspor.

Striker Rodrigo Muniz, who had been a target for the club the previous summer, landed on Teesside in a loan move from Fulham, where he had been a promotion-winner.

Youngster Isaac Fletcher left on loan to National League Scunthorpe United, while promising forwards Sonny Finch and Calum Kavanagh committed their futures to the club with new professional contracts.

In what proved to be Boro’s final incoming addition of the window, Brighton’s Matt Clarke signed on a permanent basis to end our search for a coveted left-sided defender.

Come Deadline Day on 1 September, Josh Coburn agreed a loan switch to league One Bristol Rovers, a move he will make at the end of his rehabilitation from injury. As the hours ticked down, young forward Sam Folarin departed the club in a permanent move to Harrogate Town.
