Wilder made three changes from the side which lost to Cardiff in midweek. Anfernee Dijksteel and Duncan Watmore earned recalls while goalkeeper Zack Steffen made his return from injury.

It was Watmore who had the first opportunity of the night when Richard Wood failed to deal with a ball into the box, but the Boro striker lifted his shot over the bar.

The visitors responded when Chiedozie Ogbene was at the start and the end of a move that ended with Steffen collecting the shot.

But it was a positive opening to the game from Boro, and the Riverside crowd responded by lifting the atmosphere.

Isaiah Jones came close to opening the scoring when he grazed the upright after great work by Watmore to create the chance.

Ryan Giles warmed the hands of Viktor Johansson, who got down well to beat away a free-kick, and the visitors responded with a teasing ball into the box which Richard Wood narrowly failed to meet.

Jones was the supplier with a cross that Riley McGree headed wide while Rodrigo Muniz had a shot deflected wide deep into first half stoppage time.

The visitors had a huge escape at the start of the second period when Watmore hit the inside of the post before the ball bounced to safety.

There were also shouts for a penalty when Muniz went down under pressure from Wood as he looked to latch on to the end of a long pass forward.

It was Watmore who threatened again when he had a shot deflected wide after a great passage of play by Boro.

With 17 minutes remaining, Wilder made a triple change with Marcus Forss, Marc Bola, and Alex Mowatt all joining the fray. Rotherham followed suit with four substitutions made before the 81-minute mark.

As the clock ticked down, Matt Crooks received lengthy treatment after a collision with Rotherham keeper Johansson, but he was back on his feet and finished the game.
