On this day in 2006, Boro proved that lightning can indeed strike twice as Steve McClaren’s men repeated the heroics of the quarter-final tie to book a spot in the UEFA Cup final.

In a carbon copy of three weeks previous, the Teessiders were 3-0 down with an hour to play but this time had to complete the comeback without captain Gareth Southgate, who was replaced by semi-final star Maccarone after sustaining an injury.

It was the Italian who kick-started the fightback with a fierce shot into the corner and goals from Mark Viduka and Chris Riggott meant Boro were a goal away from Eindhoven.

In the 89th minute, up stepped Maccarone once again to send the Riverside rampant.
