Striker Chuba Akpom has joined Ajax for an undisclosed fee.

Akpom, who was in the final year of his contract and would have been available on a free transfer at the end of the season, has signed for the Dutch club after they had a bid accepted for the player. The 27-year-old scored 29 goals last season and was named Sky Bet Championship Player of the Year.

The former Arsenal trainee had initially joined us in September 2020 and scored on his debut and on his home debut.

He netted five goals in his first season with the club and was loaned back to Greek outfit PAOK in 2021/22.

The marksman returned to Boro last season and enjoyed a terrific campaign, sweeping all before him with a remarkable run that included scoring in six successive matches.

Chuba said: “I’d like to thank everyone connected with Boro and especially a big thanks to the fans for the support and love they have given me.

“Last season was full of memories I’ll never forget and I will be forever proud. Everyone knows what I think of Michael Carrick, and I’m sure success is just around the corner.

“For me now, I have an exciting new challenge with one of the biggest clubs in the world, and I can’t wait to get started with Ajax. I’ll still be following the Boro from afar and wish everyone connected with the club all the very best for the future.”

Chuba made 82 appearances for the club and scored 34 goals.

Chuba departs with the best wishes of all at MFC.
