It took Calum Kavanagh just eight minutes to score on his Newport County debut as two Boro loanees went head-to-head at Rodney Parade.

Brought into the action in the 70th minute, the Republic of Ireland youth international doubled the lead for the League Two side at the end of a slick move.

With Boro U21 team-mate Sol Brynn keeping goal for Swindon Town, Kavanagh slotted the ball into an empty net to round off a swish move from the home side.

Despite Robins substitute Tomi Adeloye bagging a consolation goal in injury time, the win gives Newport a five-point buffer between themselves and the relegation zone while Swindon sit outside of the play-offs on goal difference.

In the Championship, Grant Hall featured for the first time since returning from injury while Joe Lumley started in goal for Reading.

The on-loan defender missed five matches with a hamstring injury before returning to the matchday squad for the trip to Vicarage Road at the end of January.

Hall played 68 minutes in his comeback game as Rotherham United recorded only a second clean sheet in nine league outings, holding Sheffield United to a 0-0 draw.

Lumley started in between the sticks for Reading in their home fixture with Watford.

The Royals fought from two goals down to claim a valuable point against the promotion-chasing Hornets.

Across the border, Hayden Coulson was a late first-half substitution for Aberdeen in their 3-1 win over Motherwell.

The left-back replaced the injured Jonny Hayes in the Scottish Premiership as the Dons ended a run of five successive defeats.

And Matthew Hoppe also featured for Hibernian in their 1-0 win over St.Mirren.

The USA international made his debut 18 minutes into the contest at Easter Road, replacing Harry McKirdy.

Elsewhere, Kamil Conteh was celebrating another win for Gateshead in the National League. The Heed are now only inside the bottom four on goal difference following a 2-0 win at Solihull Moors.

In League One, Josh Coburn tasted a 2-0 defeat with Bristol Rovers as they went down 2-0 at home to MK Dons.
