On this day in 2005, Boro survived a last-gasp penalty scare to secure another European adventure.

The final day of the 2004/05 season saw Boro travel to Manchester City knowing a point would bank UEFA Cup qualification at the expense of their hosts.

A rocket of a free-kick from Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink settled the nerves in the away end but City responded through Kiki Musampa after the break.

In a dramatic injury-time twist, it seemed Boro’s hopes of successive European campaigns were dead and buried when referee Rob Styles awarded the home team a penalty.

But Mark Schwarzer had other ideas, springing to his left to deny Robbie Fowler and seal seventh place, our highest Premier League finish to date, and another season in Europe.
