Get to know the new boss of Boro Women.

The experienced Michael Mulhern, frequently known as Mick, has been appointed as head coach of Middlesbrough FC Women ahead of the 2023/24 season.

Mulhern is vastly experienced within football, especially the women’s game, having 15 years of success with Sunderland Ladies in both on the pitch achievements, leading Sunderland to an FA Cup final in 2009 and promotion to the WSL, as well as developing the careers of many England heroes such as Jill Scott, Steph Houghton and Lucy Bronze, just to name small handful.

Since leaving Sunderland in 2015, Mulhern joined the England set up, starting as a scout and an assistant coach for the Women’s U23 teams, which in turn led to more roles within the backroom staff.

Over the past five years, Mick has ventured into the men’s game, spending time in a managerial role at Northern League Division One’s Whitley Bay, followed up with a coaching role at Whitley Bay’s league opponents Jarrow Roofing.

Most recently, Mick was assistant manager at Hebburn Town, where he helped the Hornets gain promotion to the Northern Premier League Division One, as well as helping them to a historic victory over Northern League rivals Consett in the 2019/20 FA Vase final at Wembley Stadium.

With over 20 years of managerial expertise, Mick now has the challenge of helping Boro get back into the National League Premier Division, following a 10th placed finish in their first season back in the Division One North last season.

In his first interview as Boro boss, Mick exclaimed that he ‘is really excited by the plans that Middlesbrough have’ and set the standards by saying ‘the big aim is promotion quickly and then progress through the leagues’.
