A masterful away performance saw Boro through to the second round of the Carabao Cup as they beat Leeds United 3-0 at Elland Road.

Michael Carrick's men were rampant in the second half and goals from Anfernee Dijksteel, Delano Burgzorg and Josh Coburn sealed a deserved victory.

Leeds started strongly and Sol Brynn - making his senior debut in the Boro goal - was forced into a fine early save from Junior Firpo.

Boro reacted impressively and fired a warning of their own when Burgzorg powered into the box and rattled a shot into the legs of Karl Darlow.

Dijksteel flicked a header wide and Aidan Morris saw a sweet low strike kept out by Darlow as Boro searched for a breakthrough.

We went closer still when Lukas Engel touched the ball to Coburn and he turned before drilling into the side netting, with Alex Gilbert also narrowly off target in first half stoppage time.

Leeds: Darlow, Byram (Gruev 64'), Rodon, Wöber (Struijk 63'), Firpo (Bogle 64'), Ampadu, Rothwell, Gelhardt (Gnonto 63'), Piroe, Aaronson (Rutter 63'), Bamford

Subs: Meslier, Bogle, Struijk, James, Joseph, Rutter, Gnonto, Gruev, Crew

Middlesbrough: Brynn, Dijksteel, Howson (Ayling 56'), Clarke, Engel (McCormick 70'), Barlaser, Morris, Jones (Hamilton 81'), Gilbert, Burgzorg (Azaz 70'), Coburn (Latte Lath 81')

Subs: Hackney, Latte Lath, Ayling, Hamilton, Azaz, Glover, McCormick, Cartwright, Hunt

Boro had ended the first half on top and continued in that vein after the break.

The deadlock was broken in style on 50 minutes as Dijksteel carried the ball inside from the right flank and stroked it past Darlow with his left foot.

Dijksteel almost turned provider when his cross found Burgzorg, whose goalbound strike was blocked, but the second goal did arrive on the hour mark.

Boro won the ball in midfield and Coburn played it through tremendously to Burgzorg, who beat his man and guided the ball into the net via the post to mark his first start in style.

Isaiah Jones raced through and chipped wide as Boro looked to make the tie safe, which they did midway through the second half.

Coburn deservedly got onto the scoresheet this time as he swept home from close range after Jones' effort was diverted into his path.

Boro had opportunities for more - with Coburn and Dijksteel going closest - but could have little complaints about their night's work.

Leeds did threaten a goal back, with Georginio Rutter hitting the post late on, but there was to be no way past Brynn as Boro made it into round two.
