Match Review: Fulham U21s 2 Boro U21s 1

Boro Under-21s bowed out of the Premier League Cup with defeat on the road at Fulham.

Advancing as Group G runners-up, courtesy of a landslide victory at Birmingham - and a favourable result elsewhere in the final round of group-stage fixtures, Mark Tinkler’s charges had already pulled off a major coup to reach the knockout stages.

But there was to be no joy in the capital as, despite a goal for Sonny Finch on his return, the Cottagers ended our run at the round of 16.

Ahead of a busy week, there were welcome returns for Joe Gibson, Pharrell Willis and Finch, all of whom have spent lengthy periods on the treatment table, with Gibson making his first start since October 2022.

Knowing the match could go the distance with extra time and penalties, both sides were keeping it tight in the opening stages and there was little in the way of goalmouth action.

And while the first chance of the game fell to the young Teessiders, Fulham began to grow into the contest – Shea Connor saving well from Josh King and Terrell Works to ensure the contest remained level by half time.

Shortly after the restart, though, Connor was eventually beaten, Lemar Gordon squeezing in at the near post to hand Fulham the advantage.

Tinkler looked to the bench in response, and the introduction of Finch proved inspired, the England U18 forward firing home from the penalty spot after a trip in the area.

But the Teessiders’ lead would last just 10 minutes, Adrion Pajaziti also converting from 12 yards following an alleged handball.

Attention now turns to Premier League 2 for Boro U21s with Chelsea making the trip to Rockliffe on Friday. Kick-off is set for 1pm.
