Boro Women will showcase their hard pre-season work in their first open game against Derby County Ladies.

The girls head to the Don Amott Arena in the hopes of carrying on their good fortune after a 2-0 win in a behind-closed-doors game over Hull City Ladies last week.

As the team look towards Sunday, mfc.co.uk takes a look at the Ewes.

The background

A solid FAWNL Premier Division outfit, Derby have solidified their place as a top FAWNL Northern Premier Division outfit, consistently challenging at the top end of the league.

In the past five seasons, the Ewes have finished in the top four, five times, finishing runners-up twice and only last season fell short of their previous finishes.

Last season Derby County Women managed to get their hands on some silverware, winning the FAWNL Plate - beating Cambridge United Women 3-0 in the final.

With five new additions to their squad this summer the Ewes will be a revamped side in their opening pre-season game against Boro.

The manager

Sam Griffiths has been the Manager of Derby County Women since the 2018/19 season.

Griffiths' Derby career began in 2009 when she first joined the club as a player before injury ended her playing days.

Griffiths' first game came against Boro in a 3-0 win for the Ewes and has since managed over 100 games.

Key players

Over the years, the Ewes gained a reputation for their players' goal tally and despite not finishing as high in the league as they had done previously, that vain of goalscoring form never left the players.

Last season Amy Sims and  Eleanor Ashton scored a combined 33 league goals for Derby, 21 for the former and 12 for the latter.

Emily Joyce is a mainstay in the Ewes midfield, she has featured for the Ewes in six successive seasons, was their top appearance maker last season and has won their Player of the Season back in the 2022/23 season.

Lucy Jones is a new name in the Derby squad but is set to be a key figure in the team. The 'keeper has experience in between the sticks in the WSL and internationally with England.

Past meetings

The last time the two sides met was in the 2021/22 season when a strong Derby side who finished runners-up took six points from Boro, winning 2-0 and 4-0.
