Boro travel to Harrogate Town on Wednesday to continue their preparations ahead of the start of the Sky Bet Championship season.

The game will take place at The Exercise Stadium at 7.30pm.

Michael Carrick’s side will look to continue their winning run in pre-season and will be watched on by a sold-out Boro away end.

The background

Harrogate Town achieved promotion from National League North to the National League back in 2018.

After finishing sixth in their first season in the National League, they were beaten in the play-offs. In the following season the club reached the play-off final, beating Notts County to gain promotion to the Football League for the first time in their history.

Last season saw Harrogate finish 13th in League Two, their highest finish to date.

So far in pre-season, Harrogate have been beaten by League One teams Huddersfield Town and Lincoln City as well as Championship sides Leeds United and Sheffield United.

The manager

Simon Weaver is the man in charge in the Harrogate dugout. Weaver is the longest-serving manager in English football, having been at the club for 15 years.

Weaver has guided the club from the National League North to League Two in his time at the club.

Weaver first took charge in a player-manager role in 2009. After gaining promotion to League Two, his side won their first game in the Football League 4-0 away to Southend.

Key players

Harrogate have several players that have been on the journey from the non-league to League Two.

One of those is midfielder George Thompson. He made the move to Harrogate in 2017 when the club was in National League North.

Thompson played a key role in the club's promotions from National League North and the National League, and last season the midfielder was their top goalscorer with 16 goals in 43 appearances.

Anthony O’Connor is a key figure in Harrogate’s side, having made 43 appearances in League Two last season. The Irish defender also scored four goals across the 2023/24 campaign.

History

The game on Wednesday 31 July will be the first time that Boro have faced Harrogate Town.
