Boro Women's U23s beat Championship side Newcastle United Women's Development team to stay top of the league.
Our U23s side bagged their sixth win of the season yesterday against last season's league winners and Championship Development side, Newcastle United Women Devs.
First-half goals from Maddies Myers and Amber Rodgers secured the win for the 23s, who continue their unbeaten start to the season and solidify their place at the top of the league.
After a lengthy injury kept her out last season, Amber Rodgers has hit the ground running this term, scoring nine goals in seven games and sitting top of the goalscoring charts.
Summer signings, Maddie Myers and Ruby Forster have also put their stamp on the team, with the former bagging an impressive four goals in five appearances and the former playing a key part in a solid defensive unit.
Ella Hopson has had an electric start to the season, making four goal contributions in seven games and has been a creative spark in Matt Gatis' side.
Against Newcastle Boro carved out the best chances in the first half, a well-worked corner routine saw Amber Rodgers power home close range header from a pinpoint Ella Hopson delivery.
Hopson was the architect again soon after, as she fizzed in a shot from the edge of the box which the goalkeeper could only parry into the path of Maddie Myers to fire home from close range.
The second half saw Boro have numerous chances but remain solid in defence, with Newcastle having their first and only real shot on goal in the 92nd minute which was comfortable to deal with for Merrin Boyle.
On the win, Head Coach Mat Gatis said: "This game was a perfect summary of all of the areas which we have worked on over the first couple of months of the season."
"Our press was effective at disrupting Newcastle's rhythm throughout the game, and the combination play was great throughout.
"A particular focus before the game was our defensive shape and work rate, and the girls couldn't be faulted as they battled for every ball and shut out one of the league's top-scoring teams.
"Our focus now turns to the County Cup against Redcar Town, where we aim to continue our momentum and aim for a spot in the semi-finals."
