Tommy Conway was at the double as Boro returned to winning ways at the Riverside.

Michael Carrick's men produced some superb football to see off Hull City, taking a deserved two-goal advantage into half-time thanks to efforts from Finn Azaz and Conway.

The Tigers threatened a comeback in the second half as they halved the deficit, but Conway's second on 79 minutes secured maximum points.

Boro produced an outstanding first half performance to wrestle control.

Azaz - restored to the side after missing out on Wednesday's defeat to Blackburn through illness - was at the centre of much of the brightest play, as was fit-again Hayden Hackney.

Delano Burgzorg was just unable to stretch enough to turn home an Azaz cross early on, while Conway went close as he swept wide following a Hackney through ball.

The deserved breakthrough arrived in style just beyond the midway point in the half. Hackney helped the ball forward and Azaz did the rest, whipping a superb left-foot effort into the top corner as he notched his sixth goal of the season.

Boro motored on from there, with Ben Doak especially influential on the right flank, and made it 2-0 four minutes before the half-time break.

Anfernee Dijksteel won possession high up the pitch and played it on to Doak, whose audacious chip to the back post was headed back across goal by Conway and into the net.

Middlesbrough: Brynn, Dijksteel, Fry, Edmundson, Neto Borges, Barlaser, Hackney, Doak, Azaz, Burgzorg (Latte Lath 83'), Conway (Howson 86')

Subs: Clarke, Latte Lath, Jones, Ayling, Gilbert, Howson, Hamilton, Forss, Glover

Hull: Pandur, Coyle, McLoughlin, Jones, Drameh (Giles 56'), Simons (Puerta 55'), Ömür (Mehlem 81'), Slater, Palmer (Burstow 69'), Kamara, João Pedro (Bedia 69')

Subs: Giles, Mehlem, Bedia, Longman, Burns, Puerta, Jacob, Racioppi, Burstow

Boro started the second half on the front foot, too, as we aimed to make the points safe.

Doak almost forced an own goal when he beat a defender and fizzed in a low cross which Lewie Coyle deflected towards his own goal, only for Hull goalkeeper Ivor Pandur to make a smart save.

Pandur was effective in keeping the score at two, producing a tremendous fingertip save from Burgzorg before keeping out an improvised effort from Conway. Doak had earlier seen a deflected shot drop just wide.

Hull got themselves back into it with 20 minutes remaining as Abu Kamara ran away down the left and produced a superb cross which substitute Mason Burstow headed in at the back post.

Boro reacted well and went close when Doak got in down the right and played it across goal for Conway, whose flick was saved by the legs of Pandur.

Doak's header from a recycled corner was tipped away by Pandur before the two-goal lead was restored 11 minutes from the end.

Two Scotland internationals combined as Doak played in Conway and he took it past his man before dinking home his second of the afternoon.

Conway drove at Hull in search of a third, but saw one effort pushed wide by Pandur as the game reached its closing stages.

There continued to be chances at both ends, with the best Tigers opening leading to a strike from Kamara which Sol Brynn saved.

No further goals followed as Boro put maximum points on the board.
