A controversial late penalty sent Boro to a PL Cup defeat at the hands of Aston Villa in a game that saw three red cards.

Villa had taken a first half lead, but Frankie Coulson equalised two minutes into the second half with his fourth goal of the season.

Boro were reduced to 10 men with eight minutes left when Oliver Martin was dismissed for two yellow cards, and 10 became nine when Prince Acheampong followed him in the 90th minute.

The game still appeared to be heading for a draw until Villa were awarded a controversial penalty deep in stoppage time. Max Jenner converted the spot-kick and was then promptly dismissed after being shown a second yellow card for celebrating.
