Boro U21s came flying out the blocks and the early pressure counted when Matthews was fouled inside the penalty area with four minutes on the clock. The striker stepped up to take the penalty and made no mistake from 12 yards, grabbing his first goal of the season.
With Boro dominating possession in the opening exchanges, Matthews almost added a second but he glanced his header narrowly wide of the post.
Despite the fast start from Boro, the hosts drew level when King drilled a strike from outside the box into the bottom corner beating Nathan Fisher in the Boro goal.
Moments later the home side took the lead when King hit a right-footed strike from close distance into the back of the net for his second of the evening.
Mark Tinkler's side came close to drawing level before the end of the first half. Charlie Lennon found room inside the box but he dragged his effort just wide of the post.
