A record crowd of 4,083 cheered Boro Women to a superb 7-0 win over Doncaster Rovers Belles as the Teessiders strengthened their promotion hopes.

In their final home match of the season, goals from Lauren Robson (2), Armani Maxwell, Ellen Turnbull, Jess Mett, Millie Bell and Kacie Elson secured maximum points for Michael Mulhern's side.

The result means Boro go into their last league fixture at Barnsley in a fortnight level on points with leaders Cheadle Town Stingers as the teams do battle for the one promotion spot.

Buoyed by the enthusiastic crowd - beating the previous Boro Women record attendance of 2,177 - the hosts took the lead in style after just 94 seconds.

Ellen Turnbull's cross from the right was emphatically finished by Robson to hand Boro a dream start.

Using the momentum of the early strike to their advantage, Boro controlled proceedings as they aimed to make the scoreline more comfortable.

Robson was again key in the second goal on 24 minutes. Her corner was half-cleared as far as Maxwell, who hooked the ball into the roof of the net to spark more celebrations.

Boro knew goal difference could prove pivotal in the pursuit of their ambitions, and attempted to improve those further in the remainder of the first half.

A long-range strike from Abby Towers was saved but from the resulting corner from Maxwell, it was 3-0 as Turnbull nodded home.

Mett almost made it four, but her thunderbolt from distance crashed against the crossbar as Boro looked set to be forced to settle for three before half-time.

That did not prove to be the case, though, with Maxwell dancing through on the stroke of the break before finding Mett, who finished clinically.

Less than five minutes into the second half, Bell scored Boro's fifth with a towering header from Robson's corner.

Elson almost made an immediate impact after being brought on as a substitute, only to be denied by a fine block, while a powerful drive from Maxwell narrowly cleared the crossbar.

Elson rattled the crossbar with another fine strike before a flowing move produced arguably the best goal of the game on 70 minutes.

Robson was the goalscorer, skipping inside her defender and onto her left foot before curling home.

A terrific cross from Elson was sliced just over the bar by a defender but from the resulting corner, the substitute got her goal with a hooked finish.

That proved to be the end of the goalscoring as Boro finished with seven, and they now have two weeks to wait for their vital season-ending clash with Barnsley.
