Boro were beaten by a second half turnaround at Hillsborough.

Finn Azaz’s early finish had put the Teessiders on course in the Steel City, and there were opportunities for that lead to be extended.

The hosts equalised nine minutes into the second half, though, before scrambling in what proved to be the winner in the 89th minute.

Boro – unchanged from the XI which started Good Friday’s win over Plymouth Argyle – needed two early saves from Mark Travers to retain parity.

The Republic of Ireland international first pushed a Barry Bannan drive wide before making a tremendous fingertip stop to keep out a Gabriel Otegbayo header.

Moments later, we were ahead after a fine move led to a ball from Hayden Hackney to Azaz, who got it out of his feet with his first touch before deftly finishing with the outside of his right boot.

There was a golden chance for Boro to double the lead midway through the first half when Hackney was bundled over in the area.

Tommy Conway’s spot-kick was saved by Pierce Charles, though, and the Wednesday goalkeeper quickly picked himself up to push away the rebound too.

Boro continued to attack and had another sighter when Morgan Whittaker dragged wide of the target on 23 minutes.

The Owls attempted to hit back in the latter stages of the first half, with Josh Windass proving to be their biggest goal threat.

He saw a long-range free-kick beaten away by Travers before another strike from the forward whistled narrowly past the post.

We ended the half back on top and could have gone in at the break further ahead, but Marcus Forss’ effort was well-saved by Charles.

Travers was called upon again four minutes into the second half, denying Windass with his foot.

He could do nothing to prevent the Wednesday man levelling the scoring soon after, though. Michael Smith’s header bounced off the post but the Owls kept it alive and Windass slid home at the back post.

Boro responded well and half-openings for Aidan Morris, Forss and Conway signalled a warning to the hosts.

Wednesday then ran up a head of steam of their own. Anfernee Dijksteel blocked well from Anthony Musaba, Travers pushed away another Windass strike and Otegbayo sent a free header wide.

Musaba scrambled in what proved to be the winner with a minute remaining for the hosts.

Boro were desperately close to equalising seven minutes into stoppage time, but Delano Burgzorg was denied by Charles and the rebound from Conway rattled the crossbar.
