Neither side had a sight of goal in a tight first half-hour, although there were some half-openings in the latter stages of the half.

Riley McGree was off-target with two efforts while an on-target drive by Dan Barlaser was inadvertently deflected wide by Delano Burgzorg.

Andi Weimann miscued a decent opportunity for the visitors before they had the best chance of the first 45 minutes, with Harry Leonard’s volley crashing against the crossbar.

Middlesbrough: Glover, Dijksteel, Edmundson, Clarke, Engel, Barlaser, McCabe (Hackney 76'), Hamilton (Forss 65'), Gilbert, McGree (Latte Lath 76'), Burgzorg

Subs: van den Berg, Fry, Hackney, Latte Lath, Forss, McCormick, Connor, Matthews, Bailey Palmer

Blackburn: Tóth, Brittain, Hyam, Batth, Beck, Buckley, Tronstad, Weimann, Cantwell (Dolan 81'), Rankin-Costello, Leonard (Gueye 81')

Subs: Pears, McFadzean, Gueye, Dolan, Tyjon, O'Grady-Macken, Litherland, Pratt, Dunn

The second half began in lively fashion as Leonard headed over for the visitors before at the other end, Alex Gilbert’s crisp half-volley was tipped over by Balazs Toth.

Barlaser then saw a clean strike bounce wide as Boro attempted to exert some pressure on Rovers.

Weimann could have put the visitors in front on 68 minutes when he charged down a Tom Glover clearance and advanced towards goal, but the goalkeeper reacted well to pressurise the forward, who fired over.

There was no mistake from the Austrian shortly afterwards, though, as he slammed home from 12 yards to put Blackburn in front.

Leonard could have quickly put the away side two ahead, but he struck wide after running through on goal.

Anfernee Dijksteel powered one over from the edge of the box as Boro searched for a route back into the tie, with another strike from distance by substitute Hayden Hackney pushed away by Toth.

Michael Carrick's men continued to push for an equaliser but there was to be no way through as Blackburn advanced to round four.
