Hailing from Yorba Linda, California, Matthew started his football career with the LA Galaxy academy as a teenager before playing for the Barca Residency Academy in Arizona.

In June 2019, the striker was snapped up by Schalke 04 and he played for Schalke 04 II, the club's reserve side, in 2020, netting five goals across all competitions.

Called up to the first-team set-up the following campaign, his Bundesliga debut came on 28 November 2020 when he started away at Borussia Monchengladbach.

Just six weeks later he scored his first goals for the club, a hat-trick against Hoffenheim, to become the first American to bag a treble in the German top flight.

Following his 21-minute hat-trick, Matthew scored in three successive matches, also finding the net against Eintracht Frankfurt and FC Koln, to win the Bundesliga’s Rookie of the Month for January 2021.

As a result of his fine form, he was rewarded with his first international call-up for a friendly with Switzerland in May 2021 before making his US debut against Martinique in July.

After registering an assist in the 6-1 demolition of Martinique, Matthew scored his first goal at international level against Jamaica in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, heading in the decisive winner in the 84th minute.

On the domestic front, Matthew made a summer deadline day move from Schalke to Mallorca in the summer of 2021 before penning a four-year deal with Boro a year later.

In his first season at the club he made six appearances in the Championship before a loan move north of the border to Hibernian, where he made seven appearances.

The young American scored one goal for the club in a 2-0 win against Kilmarnock.

After that loan spell, Matthew returned to the States in a loan move to San Jose Earthquakes. The striker scored two goals in MLS, helping the side to a ninth-place finish.

Since returning to Boro, Matthew has featured on the bench on multiple occasions for Michael Carrick’s side.
